Mobile phones help us lose weight?

Posted August 13, 2010 by Clare Jacobson

Companies like Lose It, Fitness Keeper, and Daily Burn are attempting to revolutionize how we think about fitness and weight loss. The difference? They’re making it MOBILE. These companies are making it easy and potentially fun for people to track their progress, see where they are daily, and more clearly understand their diets from their mobile phones. Here’s the sound bite for these three companies:

Lose It

LoseIt: This is a free iPhone App that lets you select your goals, enter your food choices, see caloric values, and track progress. You can also enter exercise information, and interact with friends to help stay motivated. All your personal data is compiled continually and you can get full reports whenever you want them.

Run Keeper

RunKeeper/FitnessKeeper
: This company has a free iPhone App, a ProApp which is $9.99, an Android App, as well as options for linking with Facebook and using your browser. This service is very action based and lets you track your weekly activities, plan routes for running/jogging, etc., and meet up with friends and other users to exercise together. You can also use their “Fitness Reports” to track your weekly miles covered, weight loss, and body fat index percentage.

Daily Burn

DailyBurn: DailyBurn is perhaps the most comprehensive weight-loss option, and offers mobile apps, as well as browser capabilities. They offer a free mobile app for tracking your progress and finding caloric values, and a second mobile app for $0.99 that scans bar codes on food items and tells you their nutritional information. There are tabs for nutrition, exercise, meeting with peers, and even a place to set up friendly competitions like your own “Biggest Loser” game.

Are you using any of these yet? If so, tell us what you think…

Lose It helped me loose 35 pounds so far this year. Runkeeper got me excited about running. These two apps have gotten me from couch potato to running my 1st 5k and ready for my first half marathon. I’m now looking to run a qualifying marathon for the Boston marathon next year. Talk about a mid life crisis. Needless to say, both application have been effective for me.

People around the world are using Runmeter to get fit and stay fit. Runmeter tracks your runs, but does much more, such as allowing you to compete with your own personal best, while connecting with Google Maps, Twitter and Facebook. San Francisco-based Abvio also makes apps for cycling (Cyclemeter) and walking/hiking (Walkmeter): http://www.abvio.com.

Comment from another cool company called Abvio.

Hi Clare:

Thanks for covering iPhone fitness apps and social sites recently. I realize it’s too late to squeeze Runmeter in, but I did want you to be aware of Abvio, which is located in SF. Runmeter, and sister apps Cyclemeter and Walkmeter, are top 20 paid Health & Fitness apps on iTunes. Quite an accomplishment for Abvio, which is a start up and just launched their apps this year. Many users want to focus on their workouts, rides and runs and don’t necessarily want to be tethered to a web site, this is where Abvio comes in. Their apps connect directly
to Twitter and Facebook so you can see maps of where you’re running and followers can @reply for motivation. And, because the apps include built in text to speech you can actually hear their replies!

Great post right here. One thing I would really like to say is the fact most professional job areas consider the Bachelors Degree as the entry level requirement for an online certification. While Associate Certifications are a great way to start out, completing your own Bachelors opens up many opportunities to various jobs, there are numerous on-line Bachelor Course Programs available coming from institutions like The University of Phoenix, Intercontinental University Online and Kaplan. Another concern is that many brick and mortar institutions make available Online variations of their qualifications but normally for a drastically higher fee than the corporations that specialize in online education plans.
