Do you need texting rehab?

We all know it is against the law to text and drive, but how much has that really affected you? Have you stopped texting and driving altogether? Do you do it occasionally? Or do you use your phone in the car without a second thought and just keep an eye out for the police?
There are a few companies that have emerged as a result of this dilemma to provide us with an option for an extreme texting intervention. Two of these companies are: Zoomsafer, and iZUP.

Both Zoomsafer and iZUP are services you sign-up for and pay a monthly or yearly fee to use. Basically, the companies hold all your calls, text message, and email notifications while your car is in motion. Once you stop, all of these held messages are released to you. The companies use GPS technology to decipher when it is unsafe for you to be texting, and turn off your phone’s capabilities to communicate until you have fully stopped.

There are some exceptions to this rule, i.e., you can set the system so you can always dial emergency contacts, as well as receive phone calls from specified numbers when programmed in beforehand.
The systems can be overridden altogether with a password. So, this means maybe your should have someone else set up your system so you can’t cheat, and don’t pretend you wouldn’t! This feature is especially useful for parents and employers who want to ensure there is no way around that password protection screen.
Hoards of people have gotten on this, “No Texting While Driving” train, and Oprah for example, has lead an impressive 383,463 people to make pledges on her website to commit to not texting while driving.
So… here’s the question: For now, these companies are charging us to use their services, which are in no way mandatory. Zoomsafer and iZUP are here to help us monitor ourselves, our children, our employees, etc., but for a cost.

Are you willing to sign up for this yet? Do you think someday these services will be mandatory on all phones and we will not have the option to override them? Do you think the future is in products like Zoomsafer’s “VoiceMate” which lets you hear and respond to text messages hands free using Voice Recognition software?
Where is this industry headed?

I think Text’nDrive offers a better alternative than the apps mentioned in this article for people who insist on checking their emails or text messages when driving. I don’t think an email will ever be worth taking someone’s life, so an app like this was needed. Plus I think it’s really cool that their site has a list of all the texting laws in the U.S. (http://www.textndrive.com/textingwhiledriving.php). Worth taking a look at!
