txtGroups

Sector: Mobile messaging

Headquarters: Bellingham, WA

Management: CEO is Amal Graafstra, famous for having RFID chips implanted in each hand.

Funding: bootstrapped.

Secret Sauce: txtGroups makes it easy to send text messages from your phone to groups; you can join existing groups or create them. The recently launched service is supported on a number of Canadian carrier networks, such as Telus, Bell, and Aliant; in the U.S. you can use txtGroups on the Cingular and T-Mobile networks. Sending is free–well, apart from your carrier’s regular SMS charges–while receiving a txtGroup message will cost you $0.25. But that seems a small price to pay to get an SMS from txtGroups customer LotteryCanada, letting you know if you’re a winner….

Seen and Heard: As Amal explained for Make magazine’s Maker Faire site, “I like to build my own solutions and integrate existing technologies in new ways.”
