Jumpcut

Sector: online video and photo management
Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
Management: Mike Folgner and Ryan Cunningham
Funding: angel funding by Westlake Venture Partners and Great Oaks Capital
Secret Sauce: Some have called this service iMovie in an online interface. Indeed, Jumpcut is sleek and the flash-based build makes the web-based editor and remixer seem like a downloadable client. You can mash up videos and add music and effects. Mike writes, “Any video can be cloned (unless restricted by the publisher), and other clips can be added to the cloned video. Sound files can be added to either overwrite existing audio or mix in with it. They also allow a number of ‘transition’ features as effects.”
Seen and Heard: A good detailed review here and a comparison of Jumpcut to nine other services that calls it “the future of online video” here. And some interesting news — Jumpcut, RES Media and Warner Brothers are co-sponsoring a contest to remix the trailer of Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, coming to theaters in July. Contestants can view the current trailer and then create a variation using adding new footage created specifically for the contest. A smart move on Jumpcut’s part to get press and attention and get people to use it.
