104 Flavors of Coke

Posted August 6, 2010 by Clare Jacobson

The Coca-Cola Company has rolled out a new product that looks pretty awesome. It’s called “Coca-Cola Freestyle,” and its already been released in small test batches to a few lucky locations, (Orange County, CA, and Atlanta, GA).

Basically it’s a soda fountain that can dispense 104 different types of soda from a single spout. There’s an easy interactive screen where users first choose the category of soda they want, (i.e. Coke, Sprite, Fanta, etc.). Say for example I choose Fanta, I am then shown a screen with a variety of Fanta options including well known flavors, and some new ones like Peach. I click on the Peach Fanta icon on the touch screen, grab my cup, get some ice, and top it off right there. The cool thing is, the 103 people standing in line behind me can all get a different flavor without any repeats! With 104 flavors people will come back to try new flavors day after day.

Downsides: There is a single spout, and so if there is any sort of malfunction, the whole machine goes down. Also, waiting in lines might be a reality. The sodas are given in cups, and sometimes, ya just want a bottle, am I right?

Upsides: The machine is sleek and modern and fun to use. There are bunch of new and exciting flavors to try. Coke gets a bunch of data about what flavors are most popular, and by what margins. It’s new and feels familiar all at the same time.

Has anyone tried this product in person yet? Where do you see this being most successful?
